Linux Engineer
Job Description
[c. $220-300k Comp Package (or equivalent), Hybrid Working - 3 Days in Office]
Are you a Linux expert looking to take full ownership of a complex, high-performance infrastructure? Our client, a global leader in quantitative trading, is seeking a high-impact Linux Engineer to architect, optimise, and scale their mission-critical systems. This is a broad, hands-on role covering everything from OS and hardware to performance tuning, storage, and automation. With no siloed teams, you’ll have full autonomy over physical and virtual infrastructure, debugging, and system enhancements. If you're technically versatile, thrive in data-heavy environments, and enjoy solving complex system-level challenges, this is an opportunity to work on cutting-edge infrastructure with real-world impact...
Key Responsibilities
- Take full ownership of Linux infrastructure, covering OS, hardware, virtualisation, storage (NFS/ZFS), and performance tuning
- Improve low-latency, high-performance trading environments, leveraging kernel tuning, BPF, and kernel-bypass technologies
- Lead cloud migrations, multi-region system resilience, and build system upgrades (transitioning from Red Hat 8 to Red Hat 9)
- Solve deep infrastructure challenges - debugging hardware bottlenecks and enhancing observability and automation
- Architect scalable, efficient data-intensive environments, leveraging hardware to reduce latency and optimise performance
- Build and maintain system automation, configuration management, and monitoring solutions
- Work cross-functionally to identify and resolve complex system issues before they impact operations
- Participate in on-call rotations, ensuring rapid incident response and system stability
Key Requirements
- 3+ years of experience working with high-performance, real-time systems in finance, tech, or other data-intensive industries
- Expertise in Linux infrastructure, including kernel internals, virtualisation, package management, and system configuration
- Strong programming ability in Go or Python, with experience using BPF for kernel instrumentation
- Hands-on experience with performance debugging using tools
- SME-level expertise in one or more of the following: Kerberos, LDAP, NetApp, Splunk, DNS, PostgreSQL
- Proactive, self-driven mindset - able to work independently and navigate undocumented environments
- Versatile infrastructure knowledge - must be comfortable across multiple domains rather than a single specialisation
- Strong technical intuition, able to grasp complex system architecture and anticipate scaling challenges
