Ultra-Low Latency Linux Platform Engineer
Job Description
[Up to c. $375k Comp Package (or equivalent) | Hybrid Working - 4 Days in Office]
Role Overview
We’re representing a leading global investment management firm making a major investment into its ultra-low-latency trading infrastructure. The business is expanding its co-location footprint and looking to push platform performance significantly further across Linux, networking, hardware and automation.
This role sits within a specialist low-latency platform function and can align to either a strategic engineering track or a reliability-focused track. The strategic side focuses on latency analysis, kernel-level optimisation and platform design; the reliability side focuses on co-location stability, site buildouts and implementation of performance improvements. Both require strong Linux engineering, automation and a proactive approach to improving systems before issues become visible...
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse latency profiles across trading applications, Linux systems and network paths to identify performance improvements
- Tune Linux platforms across kernel, CPU, memory and networking layers for latency-sensitive workloads
- Design and prototype improvements across the low-latency stack, including custom kernels, hardware tuning and network optimisation
- Support and improve co-location infrastructure, including platform upgrades, new site buildouts and production reliability
- Troubleshoot complex issues across systems, networking, applications and market data flows
- Improve automation across provisioning, configuration, deployment and operational workflows
- Partner with engineering and infrastructure teams to turn performance findings into production-ready changes
- Contribute to market data and network upgrade initiatives, including high-throughput connectivity and Layer 1 improvements
- Participate in a light support rotation, with occasional planned weekend work balanced appropriately
What You’ll Bring…
- 6-12 years’ experience in Linux systems engineering, platform engineering or low-latency infrastructure
- Strong Linux engineering background across enterprise distributions such as RHEL, Rocky, CentOS or similar
- Practical experience tuning performance-sensitive systems across kernel, CPU, memory and networking layers
- Experience with kernel development or kernel-level performance tuning
- Strong understanding of TCP, UDP, multicast and low-latency network behaviour
- Experience with kernel bypass or low-latency NIC tooling such as Solarflare / Onload
- Strong automation ability using Python, Bash, Ansible, Chef or similar tools
- Familiarity with trading protocols or market data flows such as FIX, OUCH/ITCH, BOE, SBE or similar
- Good understanding of physical server architecture, CPU behaviour and hardware-level performance considerations
- Ability to investigate ambiguous performance issues and proactively identify areas for improvement
- Experience working in production environments where reliability, speed and operational discipline are critical
- (Preferred) Exposure to Layer 1 networking, RF market data, FPGA-adjacent environments or exchange connectivity
- (Preferred) Experience supporting co-location environments in trading, market making or low-latency technology
