Job Description

[Up to c. $450k Comp Package (or equivalent) | Hybrid Working]

Role Overview

We’re working with a globally respected, multi-strategy investment firm that has built a cloud platform operating at exceptional scale - supporting data-intensive research, large distributed compute estates, and demanding internal engineering teams. As cloud usage continues to grow, the firm is looking for a Cloud Platform Engineering Lead to take genuine end-to-end ownership of its public cloud environment. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who cares deeply about quality, reliability, and outcomes. You’ll lead a small, high-calibre cloud engineering team while remaining close to the technical detail - setting standards, shaping architecture, and ensuring the platform scales safely and efficiently. The environment is complex and demanding: petabytes of data, tens of thousands of CPUs, and internal users who expect the cloud platform to feel like a product, not shared infrastructure...

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a globally distributed team of cloud engineers, setting a high bar for engineering quality, ownership, and delivery
  • Take full accountability for the design, evolution, and operational health of the firm’s cloud platform
  • Define and continuously refine cloud architecture standards covering scalability, resilience, security, and cost efficiency
  • Build and maintain clear platform abstractions and reference patterns that application teams can adopt with confidence
  • Act as a close technical partner to application and infrastructure teams, removing friction and enabling fast, safe delivery
  • Design and deliver self-service cloud capabilities that balance developer autonomy with strong governance and guardrails
  • Own cloud governance practices, including identity integration, access models, environment standardisation, and cost controls
  • Ensure production readiness across availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity for cloud-hosted services
  • Champion automation-first approaches across provisioning, deployment, and lifecycle management
  • Serve as a senior technical escalation point, participating in on-call and maintenance rotations when required

What You’ll Bring…

  • 9-15 years’ experience building and operating large-scale cloud platforms in production environments
  • A strong builder background - ideally someone who began as a software engineer and moved into platform or infrastructure engineering
  • 4+ years’ experience leading engineers, with clear evidence of developing people, setting direction, and delivering through teams
  • Deep, hands-on expertise with AWS in high-scale environments (petabytes of data, large compute estates, complex internal consumers)
  • Strong architectural grounding in Kubernetes-based platforms and modern cloud-native design patterns
  • Ability to write and review Python used for automation, tooling, or platform services
  • Proven experience creating cloud standards, blueprints, or internal platforms used by multiple engineering teams
  • Deep familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code and automated delivery pipelines (Terraform strongly preferred)
  • Practical experience integrating enterprise IAM models into cloud platforms
  • A solid understanding of cloud-native security principles, including identity, isolation, networking, and shared responsibility
  • Demonstrated ownership of cost optimisation and FinOps-aligned decision-making
  • Experience designing for resilience, including multi-region strategies and recovery testing
  • A strong sense of responsibility and accountability - you care about outcomes, not just designs
  • A people-first mindset: you value mentoring, trust, and building high-performing teams as much as technical excellence
