Head of Cloud Platform Engineering
Job Description
[Up to c. $450k Comp Package (or equivalent) | Hybrid Working]
Role Overview
We’re working with a globally recognised multi-strategy investment firm that has invested heavily in building a scalable, resilient, and developer-friendly cloud platform to support its investment and research teams. As the firm continues to expand its cloud footprint, it is seeking an experienced Cloud Platform Engineering Lead to take end-to-end ownership of its public cloud environment. This role sits at the intersection of cloud architecture, platform engineering, security governance, and team leadership. You’ll guide a small, high-calibre team of cloud engineers while remaining technically hands-on - defining standards, shaping strategy, and ensuring the cloud platform is secure, cost-efficient, and easy for internal teams to consume...
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a globally distributed team of cloud engineers, setting technical direction while remaining actively involved in design and delivery
- Define and evolve the firm’s cloud platform strategy, covering architecture, scalability, reliability, security posture, and operational standards
- Establish clear architectural patterns and reference designs that enable application teams to build resilient, cost-aware, and secure cloud services
- Act as a strategic partner to application, infrastructure, and platform teams - removing friction and accelerating delivery through well-designed cloud primitives
- Design and deliver self-service cloud capabilities, balancing developer velocity with governance, guardrails, and operational safety
- Own cloud governance practices including identity integration, access controls, cost controls, and environment standardisation
- Ensure production readiness across availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity for cloud-hosted services
- Champion automation-first practices across provisioning, deployment, and lifecycle management
- Participate in senior-level on-call and maintenance rotations as a technical escalation point
What You’ll Bring…
- 9-15 years’ experience building and operating large-scale cloud platforms, with deep hands-on exposure to production AWS environments
- 4+ years’ experience leading engineers, including setting direction, mentoring senior talent, and driving delivery through others
- Strong architectural grounding in Kubernetes-based platforms and modern cloud-native design patterns
- Proven experience defining cloud standards, blueprints, or platform abstractions used by multiple engineering teams
- Deep familiarity with infrastructure-as-code approaches (Terraform strongly preferred) and automated delivery pipelines
- Practical experience integrating enterprise IAM models into cloud platforms
- Strong understanding of cloud-native security concepts, including isolation, identity, network controls, and shared responsibility models
- Working knowledge of hybrid connectivity and cloud networking concepts (e.g. private connectivity, routing, segmentation)
- Demonstrated ownership of cost optimisation strategies and FinOps-aligned decision making
- Ability to write and review Python used for automation, tooling, or platform services
- Experience designing for resilience, including multi-region strategies, failover planning, and recovery testing
- Clear, confident communicator who can operate credibly with engineers, architects, and senior stakeholders
