FPGA Developer - Trading Systems
Job Description
[Up to c. £700k Comp Package | Hybrid Working | London or Similar Timezone Preferred]
Role Overview
We’re working with a fast-growing algorithmic trading firm that has scaled from a handful of people to a 25+ ETF trading team in the last couple of years, competing directly with the most established global players. They’re now hiring one of their first dedicated FPGA Engineers to build a greenfield hardware acceleration stack that directly drives trading performance. You’ll design FPGA systems from scratch - owning RTL development in SystemVerilog, selecting the toolchain, and shaping how the desk uses hardware to cut latency, sharpen execution, and lift competitiveness in ETF markets. With direct visibility into trading results and the freedom to innovate, this will suit a hands-on engineer who wants their work to have immediate impact...
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and implement FPGA-based solutions to accelerate trading performance and minimise latency exposure
- Write high-quality RTL in SystemVerilog (plus Verilog/VHDL where appropriate); create synthesizable, low-latency designs
- Own the full design lifecycle: from hardware selection through to build, testing, and deployment
- Collaborate closely with traders, software engineers, and a future FPGA teammate to align development with desk objectives
- Continuously analyse and refine systems to ensure competitive advantage in ETF trading execution
- Take responsibility for system stability, scalability, and long-term maintainability
- Document design choices and contribute to the broader engineering strategy for hardware-accelerated trading
What You’ll Bring...
- 6+ years’ hands-on FPGA design in performance-critical environments, with strong SystemVerilog RTL and SystemVerilog/UVM verification experience
- Broad technical expertise - comfortable building rather than focusing narrowly on chip design or ASIC workflows
- Strong coding and debugging ability with a focus on real-time optimisation
- Collaborative mindset, able to work effectively with colleagues across trading and technology functions
- Self-directed, capable of driving projects independently in a high-autonomy environment
- Background in trading firms or financial markets, with a strong understanding of how FPGA impacts execution
- (Preferred) Prior experience at firms recognised for FPGA development
