Senior Linux Infrastructure Engineer
Job Description
[Up to c. $400k Comp Package (or equivalent) | Hybrid Working]
Role Overview
We’re supporting a globally respected research-driven investment firm seeking a seasoned Linux-focused infrastructure engineer to join its core Platform Engineering organisation. This team builds and operates the foundational systems that underpin the firm’s global compute estate - spanning on-prem datacentres, high-performance clusters, and cloud-enabled services. This position is deeply hands-on and ideal for someone who thrives on solving complex platform challenges, improving reliability at scale, and influencing the technical direction of critical infrastructure. You’ll work across operating systems, networking, automation, and security controls, contributing to the evolution of a highly sophisticated engineering stack used by quantitative researchers, developers, and business teams worldwide...
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the architecture, build-out, and day-to-day operation of Linux-based infrastructure across global datacentres and cloud environments
- Improve reliability, performance, and security across distributed systems that support trading, research, and large-scale compute workloads
- Develop automation and tooling (primarily in Python) to streamline configuration, deployment, monitoring, and operational workflows
- Perform in-depth troubleshooting using tracing, diagnostic, and low-level system analysis tools across both host and network layers
- Implement and refine security controls, collaborating closely with security engineering to strengthen policy, hardening, and access models
- Build and integrate core platform services such as DNS, DHCP, Kerberos, authentication frameworks, and configuration management systems
- Work alongside Networking, Storage, Cloud, and Software Engineering teams to ensure platform coherence and consistent infrastructure standards
- Support CI/CD adoption and automated build pipelines that improve delivery reliability across Linux services
- Influence engineering direction by participating in design reviews, proposing improvements, and guiding best practices across the organisation
What You’ll Bring…
- 8+ years working in Linux systems engineering or large-scale distributed infrastructure roles, ideally in complex, performance-sensitive environments
- Strong Python development experience for automation, orchestration, and platform tooling (Go, Rust, C, Java, or C# also valuable)
- Deep knowledge of Linux internals - system performance, filesystems, namespaces, kernel behaviour, and configuration management
- Proficiency with diagnostic and tracing utilities (e.g., perf, strace, tcpdump) and a structured approach to debugging across OS and network boundaries
- Familiarity with automated build and deployment ecosystems, CI/CD workflows, and modern SDLC practices
- Experience running core enterprise services such as DNS, DHCP, Kerberos, directory services, or distributed configuration systems
- Understanding of networking fundamentals, information security principles, databases, and large-scale storage integrations
- Excellent communication skills - able to work effectively with globally distributed teams and collaborate across functions
- (Preferred) A strong academic background in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline
