Job Description

[Up to c. £225k Comp Package | Hybrid Working - Likely 4 Days in Office]

Role Overview

We’re working with a highly quantitative, globally distributed investment firm that operates at significant scale across trading, research, and real-time systems. The organisation is expanding its core database engineering capability and is looking for an experienced Database Engineer to help design, operate, and evolve the data platforms that underpin mission-critical workloads. This role sits within a global systems engineering group responsible for delivering resilient, low-latency, and highly scalable database infrastructure. You’ll work closely with developers, researchers, and infrastructure teams to support a diverse estate of production databases - balancing performance, reliability, and operational simplicity...

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and operate production-grade database platforms supporting latency-sensitive trading and research workloads
  • Own availability, resilience, and recovery strategies across core database services, including replication, backup, and failover
  • Partner with application and infrastructure engineers to design data models, schemas, and access patterns that scale cleanly
  • Diagnose and resolve complex performance issues, including query optimisation, indexing strategies, and resource contention
  • Automate provisioning, upgrades, and operational workflows to reduce manual intervention and improve reliability
  • Take end-to-end ownership of database-related projects, from initial design through rollout and steady-state operation
  • Contribute to platform standards, documentation, and operational runbooks to improve long-term maintainability
  • Participate in improving monitoring, alerting, and observability across the database estate
  • Collaborate across regions and teams to support a globally distributed production environment

What You’ll Bring…

  • 4-9 years of hands-on experience operating and supporting production database systems in demanding environments
  • Strong experience with at least one core database technology such as PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, or FoundationDB
  • Solid understanding of high-availability architectures, disaster recovery design, and backup strategies
  • Practical knowledge of query tuning, indexing, schema design, and performance optimisation
  • Exposure to infrastructure automation or configuration management tools (e.g. Terraform, Ansible, Chef)
  • Familiarity with observability stacks covering metrics, logs, and alerting (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana, ELK)
  • Comfortable working on Linux systems, including troubleshooting at the OS and database interaction layer
  • Experience scripting or automating operational tasks using Python or similar languages
  • Familiarity with version control, deployment workflows, and modern software delivery practices
  • Experience supporting CI/CD pipelines and automated release processes
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • (Preferred) Experience with additional data platforms such as Redis, MongoDB, Neo4j, or Microsoft SQL Server
  • (Preferred) Background working with cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP
  • (Preferred) Exposure to virtualisation or containerised environments, including Kubernetes
