Network Security Engineer
Job Description
[Up to c. £250k Comp Package (depending upon exp level) | Hybrid Working ~ 10 Days Remote Per Month)
Role Overview
We’re supporting a highly sophisticated quantitative research and trading organisation operating one of the most demanding private technology environments in Europe. As part of a wider investment in core infrastructure and security capability, the firm is expanding its Network Security Engineering function with two hires at different levels of seniority. This is not a traditional network role, nor a policy-only security position. The focus here is hands-on network security engineering: improving security hygiene, performing deep traffic analysis, modernising perimeter and proxy controls, and raising the overall standard of how security is designed and operated across a complex, high-performance environment.
You’ll join a flat, engineering-led team where individuals are trusted to identify gaps, define priorities, and deliver improvements end to end. There is significant scope to shape how network security is done - particularly as the organisation undertakes major upgrades across firewall and proxy platforms and continues to scale its Kubernetes-heavy estate.
Two profiles are in scope:
- Mid-Senior Engineer (approx. 5-8 years’ experience)
- Senior Engineer (approx. 8-12 years’ experience)
Both roles are hands-on, with the senior hire expected to take broader ownership and act as a technical reference point within the team.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and evolve network security controls across a global, high-performance infrastructure estate
- Perform deep traffic inspection and analysis to identify weaknesses, misconfigurations, and emerging risk patterns
- Design, implement, and refine firewall and proxy architectures, improving consistency, resilience, and security hygiene
- Act as escalation point for complex network-security incidents originating from operations teams
- Drive security-focused change initiatives, from design through rollout and post-implementation review
- Partner closely with security architecture to translate strategy into practical, deployable controls
- Lead regular security reviews and audits of network controls, ensuring alignment with internal standards and threat models
- Work alongside core infrastructure and Kubernetes platform teams to ensure secure-by-design networking patterns
- Participate in an on-call rotation (approximately 1 in 6 weeks), contributing at an engineering rather than ticket-driven level
- Take visible ownership of improvements - being accountable for delivery, not just contribution
What You’ll Bring…
- Strong background as a security engineer with deep exposure to network security domains
- Hands-on experience designing, operating, and improving enterprise firewall and proxy solutions
- Experience automating firewall or network-security workflows
- Practical expertise with firewall platforms such as Palo Alto or Fortinet (vendor-agnostic mindset expected)
- Solid experience with web proxy technologies and traffic inspection (e.g. Bluecoat or similar)
- Confidence performing packet-level analysis and understanding attacker behaviour at the network layer
- Strong grounding in networking fundamentals (routing, switching, TCP/IP, DNS) from a security perspective
- Experience working in environments with containerised platforms and Kubernetes networking considerations
- Ability to operate independently, define priorities, and create your own workload based on risk and opportunity
- Comfortable acting as the named owner for initiatives, rather than a passive contributor
- (Preferred) Familiarity with security frameworks such as NIST or CIS
- (Preferred) Exposure to Privileged Access Management or identity-adjacent security controls
