Senior Linux Infrastructure Engineer - Low Latency Trading
Job Description
[Up to c. $330k Comp Package | Hybrid Working - But Strong On-Site Presence Expected]
Role Overview
We’re representing a highly successful, technology-driven investment management firm expanding its core Linux engineering capability in New York. This team underpins a global, performance-sensitive trading environment where reliability, determinism and speed are non-negotiable. They are seeking a Senior Linux Infrastructure Engineer to take ownership of the design, optimisation and evolution of a large-scale Linux estate that supports low-latency trading across multiple co-location sites. This is not a ticket-driven operations role - it’s a hands-on engineering position focused on performance tuning, automation, and platform scalability.
You’ll play a central role in enabling new trading strategies, onboarding additional locations, and ensuring that mission-critical trading applications operate seamlessly across a distributed infrastructure footprint. The environment is performance-focused, highly automated, and engineered for precision. The team is led by an experienced infrastructure leader with deep pedigree across top-tier quantitative firms. The expectation is high - but so is the technical bar and impact...
Key Responsibilities
- Design, harden and optimise the firm’s Linux infrastructure across trading and research environments
- Lead performance analysis and kernel-level tuning to support ultra-low-latency application workloads
- Engineer and automate system provisioning and configuration management using Ansible and Python
- Maintain and evolve Red Hat–based environments (RHEL), including Satellite and lifecycle management
- Support Debian-based systems where applicable across the broader estate
- Work closely with trading and development teams to ensure infrastructure meets performance and reliability targets
- Partner with networking and storage engineers to ensure optimal system integration across co-location sites
- Contribute to infrastructure standardisation across global environments
- Drive automation-first practices across deployment, patching and configuration workflows
- Participate in operational support and escalation when required, ensuring production stability
What You’ll Bring…
- 6-10 years of hands-on Linux engineering experience in performance-sensitive environments
- Background within financial services, ideally buy-side or trading environments
- Deep understanding of RHEL and/or Debian distributions in production
- Strong experience with kernel tuning, system performance profiling and latency optimisation
- Proficiency in Python and Bash for infrastructure automation
- Practical experience with Ansible and configuration management tooling
- Exposure to Red Hat Satellite or similar enterprise Linux lifecycle tooling
- Solid foundational knowledge of networking (TCP/IP, multicast fundamentals), storage systems and clustering
- Comfort working in fast-paced trading environments where uptime and latency are critical
- Strong ownership mentality - someone who fixes problems rather than escalating prematurely
