Role Overview
We’re representing a leading global electronic trading and financial technology firm as it builds out a dedicated Data Risk capability within its broader Operational Risk organisation. This is a senior Director-level hire focused on establishing a firmwide approach to identifying, assessing and mitigating risks associated with how data is sourced, transformed, distributed and consumed across critical trading and technology platforms.
The remit sits at the intersection of data, technology, operational resilience and emerging AI-driven workflows. Rather than focusing purely on governance policy, this role is highly operational and investigative in nature - centred around diagnosing real-world data issues, understanding how they impact trading systems and analytics workflows, and driving practical remediation across complex environments. Key Responsibilities
- Build and lead a new enterprise Data Risk capability, including framework design, controls, processes and long-term operating model
- Develop practical approaches for identifying and managing risks associated with data quality, lineage, transformation, replication, availability and usage across trading and analytics environments
- Investigate data-related incidents and partner with technology, cyber, operational risk and model risk teams to perform root-cause analysis and drive remediation efforts
- Assess how data moves across systems, platforms, pipelines and third-party providers, identifying areas of operational or regulatory exposure
- Establish controls and oversight processes around high-risk data transformations, aggregation logic and shadow or duplicated datasets
- Provide risk oversight for AI/ML workflows, including model inputs, output integrity, dependency mapping and data handling practices
- Work closely with engineering and product teams to improve visibility into data flows and strengthen platform-level controls
- Engage directly with vendors and external data providers to address upstream quality, consistency and operational issues
- Develop reporting, metrics and governance standards to improve transparency around data-related risk across the organisation
- Embed Data Risk into wider operational and technology risk frameworks while helping drive a more risk-aware culture around data usage and management
- Hire and mentor a specialist team as the function matures over time
What You’ll Bring…
- 10-18 years’ experience across Data Risk, Operational Risk, Data Management, Technology Risk, Model Risk or related disciplines
- Strong understanding of data lifecycles across modern technology environments, including pipelines, transformation layers, replication, analytics and reporting systems
- Experience operating within electronic trading, fintech, market infrastructure, data vendor or highly regulated financial services environments
- Demonstrated experience building or implementing risk frameworks, controls and governance processes related to data or technology risk
- Strong familiarity with data architecture concepts, distributed platforms and large-scale operational workflows
- Practical understanding of AI/ML-related risk considerations, including model dependencies, data integrity and operational safeguards
- Ability to engage credibly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders across engineering, risk and business functions
- Strong communication and stakeholder management capability, particularly when challenging senior teams on control weaknesses or operational exposure
- High level of ownership, judgement and execution capability within complex organisations
- (Preferred) Background within market data providers, trading infrastructure firms or electronic trading environments
- (Preferred) Exposure to blockchain, alternative data, AI governance or advanced analytics risk oversight
