Role Overview
We’re representing a leading electronic trading and financial technology organisation as it establishes a dedicated enterprise Data Governance capability within its broader Operational Risk structure. This is a senior Director-level opportunity focused on building the firm’s governance framework for data ownership, quality, lineage, security, privacy and AI-related data standards across a highly interconnected trading and technology environment.
This role is both strategic and execution-oriented. The successful individual will define governance models, implement standards and oversight processes, and act as a central point of coordination across technology, operations, product and risk teams. A major focus will be ensuring that data used across analytics, reporting and AI/ML workflows is governed consistently, traceable end-to-end, and aligned with regulatory and operational expectations. Key Responsibilities
- Create and formalise the organisation’s enterprise-wide approach to data governance, including committee structures, accountability models and policy standards
- Introduce clear ownership and stewardship principles across critical datasets, ensuring responsibilities are understood and consistently applied across business and technology teams
- Develop governance controls covering data classification, retention, privacy, integrity, accessibility and lifecycle management
- Establish oversight processes for AI and advanced analytics use cases, ensuring appropriate standards exist around data sourcing, lineage, quality and traceability
- Work alongside operational and technology risk teams to embed governance review processes into wider enterprise control frameworks
- Improve visibility into how data is catalogued, consumed and shared across platforms, applications and reporting environments
- Lead the selection, assessment and rationalisation of governance tooling related to metadata management, lineage tracking, cataloguing and data inventory capabilities
- Create measurement frameworks and reporting standards to track governance effectiveness, policy adherence and data quality outcomes across the organisation
- Act as a senior escalation point for governance disputes, ownership ambiguity and policy exceptions involving business, technology and operational stakeholders
- Drive adoption of governance practices across engineering, operations and product teams through education, influence and cross-functional coordination
- Build a scalable governance operating model capable of supporting future regulatory, AI and enterprise data management requirements
What You’ll Bring…
- 10-18 years’ experience across enterprise data governance, data management, operational risk, data controls or related oversight functions
- Strong background within financial services, capital markets, electronic trading or other highly regulated technology-driven organisations
- Proven experience standing up or transforming enterprise governance programmes across large-scale, cross-functional environments
- Strong understanding of data ownership frameworks, stewardship models, lineage concepts and enterprise control structures
- Familiarity with governance considerations surrounding AI/ML workflows, analytics environments and modern data ecosystems
- Experience defining governance policies, operating standards, escalation processes and enterprise reporting frameworks
- Ability to assess governance technologies and platforms pragmatically against operational and regulatory requirements
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, particularly when influencing senior business, technology and operational leadership teams
- Experience coordinating broad enterprise initiatives involving multiple business units, technology groups and control functions
- Demonstrated leadership capability within complex organisations undergoing transformation or scale initiatives
- (Preferred) Exposure to governance tooling such as Collibra, Alation or comparable metadata and cataloguing platforms
- (Preferred) Familiarity with AI governance, data ethics frameworks or emerging regulatory expectations tied to AI-driven systems
