Job Description

Role Overview

We’re representing a leading global alternative investment manager to appoint a C++ OMS Development Lead within its Quantitative Technology function. The firm invests across global macro markets using both relative-value and directional strategies, supported by a highly sophisticated technology environment spanning discretionary and systematic trading. The successful candidate will lead the continued development of a heavily customised front-office platform used daily by Portfolio Managers, traders and investment professionals. This is a technical leadership position rather than a conventional engineering-management role. You will provide architectural direction, own complex development initiatives and coordinate closely with a specialist technology partner operating under a genuine co-development model. Approximately 30% of the role will remain hands-on, with C++ forming an essential part of both the position and interview process...

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a detailed front-to-back understanding of the investment workflow and order-management platform, including its interaction with execution, booking, risk and P&L systems
  • Own technical direction and contribute to architectural decisions across a highly customised, business-critical trading platform
  • Partner with the external vendor’s architects and engineers to prioritise development, challenge proposed designs and maintain clear ownership across the shared codebase
  • Lead projects from initial stakeholder discussion and requirements discovery through technical design, development, testing, release and production adoption
  • Remain hands-on in C++, writing production code, reviewing pull requests and pair programming with other engineers
  • Create reusable and performant capabilities supporting discretionary, systematic, electronic and voice-based trading workflows
  • Translate requests from Portfolio Managers, traders and investment stakeholders into scalable solutions addressing the underlying business problem
  • Improve development practices across testing, code quality, release management, technical documentation and engineering communication
  • Provide technical guidance to experienced developers while creating an environment that encourages constructive challenge and knowledge sharing
  • Evaluate relevant technologies and architectural approaches that could improve platform adaptability, resilience and time to market

What You’ll Bring...

  • Approximately 8-14 years of professional software-engineering experience, including sustained ownership of production trading or investment-management systems
  • Advanced and recent C++ development expertise, with the ability to complete a practical pair-programming assessment in C++
  • Direct experience implementing meaningful change within an OMS, EMS, OEMS or comparable electronic-trading platform
  • Strong knowledge of the order lifecycle, ideally covering order capture, pre-trade controls, execution routing, fills, trade booking and downstream integrations
  • Full-stack engineering judgement across backend services, databases, APIs, messaging, integration architecture and user-facing applications
  • Evidence of providing technical or architectural leadership while remaining personally involved in software design and development
  • The ability to own complex initiatives from ambiguous business requirement through to reliable production delivery
  • Strong commercial judgement and the confidence to challenge stated requirements when a different solution would better address the underlying need
  • A degree in Computer Science or a closely related subject from a Russell Group university, alongside top A-level grades or equivalent international attainment
  • (Preferred) Experience with Rust, Java, TypeScript, FIX, systematic execution or vendor-supported trading platforms
