Role Overview
We’re representing a technology-led financial-services organisation looking for a Software Engineer to work across both data engineering projects and the development of trading applications and internal systems. The central requirement is balance. This is not a traditional Data Engineer position, and candidates whose background is primarily data tooling, modelling or pipeline configuration are unlikely to be the right fit. The team is much more interested in someone with strong software-engineering fundamentals who is comfortable working with data, on the basis that an accomplished engineer can develop deeper data expertise more readily than a specialist Data Engineer can necessarily move into broader application development.
You’ll take ownership of finance automation and data workflows, while also contributing to performance-sensitive and higher-throughput trading systems, increasingly built in Go. Existing Go experience is not required - strong developers coming from Python, Java, C++ or another comparable language should be able to transition. Role Snapshot
- Typically bring 4-5 years of software engineering experience, with strong 2-3 year engineers also considered where they can demonstrate unusually good delivery, technical depth and progression
- Be a software engineer first, with strong programming fundamentals and experience building production applications or services rather than primarily configuring data platforms or analytics tooling
- Own data engineering projects across finance automation and the wider internal platform, building reliable ingestion, transformation and ETL workflows without needing deep expertise in any specific modelling or processing framework
- Develop primarily in Python across data-driven applications and services, applying strong practices around testing, version control, CI/CD, code quality and maintainability
- Contribute to trading applications and systems in Go, with prior Go experience optional where you bring strong transferable development experience in languages such as Java, C++ or Python
- Work on systems where throughput, performance and latency can matter, requiring an engineering mindset that extends beyond standard batch-oriented data processing
- Develop and operate Airflow workflows in AWS, improving orchestration, monitoring and reliability while progressively becoming a key internal point of expertise
- Work across the full SDLC, from understanding business requirements and shaping technical designs through implementation, deployment, production support and continuous improvement
- Partner directly with finance and other business stakeholders to replace manual and spreadsheet-led processes with sustainable software, while identifying edge cases and challenging weak requirements where necessary
- (Preferred) Experience in financial services, trading, asset management, digital assets or another transaction-heavy environment is useful, as is previous exposure to smaller engineering teams where developers work across application, platform and data concerns
