Role Overview
We’re representing a global technology-led trading organisation looking for a Senior PostgreSQL Database Engineer to take substantial ownership of database infrastructure supporting business-critical production systems.
The position is fundamentally a database engineering role, with PostgreSQL at its centre. You’ll work across availability, performance, architecture, storage, recovery and operational resilience, while partnering with systems and software engineering teams as the database estate continues to evolve. This should suit someone who has gone considerably deeper than routine database administration - somebody comfortable diagnosing difficult production behaviour, tuning databases and queries, designing resilient configurations and making sound engineering decisions when systems are under pressure...
Role Snapshot
- 5+ years of hands-on production PostgreSQL engineering experience, with the technical depth to operate as a senior subject-matter expert
- Own and improve PostgreSQL environments running on Linux/Unix, including configuration, performance, reliability and day-to-day production health
- Diagnose complex database and query performance problems, identify underlying bottlenecks and implement sustainable improvements
- Engineer highly available and recoverable database services, including backup and restore strategy, replication and disaster recovery
- Take responsibility across both production and non-production environments, supporting deployments, upgrades, configuration changes and ongoing platform evolution
- Work closely with systems engineers on server configuration, operating-system performance, storage, capacity planning and infrastructure-level troubleshooting
- Partner with software engineers on schema and database design, implementation decisions and more efficient application interaction with the database layer
- Respond directly to high-impact production issues, requiring strong troubleshooting judgement and the ability to work effectively in time-sensitive environments
- (Preferred) Production Oracle experience alongside PostgreSQL, particularly where you have supported similarly critical or performance-sensitive environments
- (Preferred) Experience with clustering, replication, storage technologies and disciplined SDLC, source-control and change-management practices
