Developer Experience Engineer - C++ Build Tooling

Europe, United Kingdom, London
Permanent
Job ID: 2615

Job Description

[Up to c. £165k Comp Package | Office-Led Working - Likely 4 Days in Office]

Role Overview

We’re representing a global quantitative investment organisation with a sizeable engineering and research population working across performance-sensitive software and data-intensive systems. They are expanding the platform capability responsible for making that population faster and more consistent at building, testing and shipping code.

The engineer will own important parts of the development toolchain, including C++ dependency packaging, build infrastructure, shared software components, CI/CD foundations and containerised developer environments. The objective is not simply to administer tooling, but to remove engineering friction and create repeatable standards that development teams can adopt across the firm. This is a hands-on developer experience role for somebody comfortable working inside large C++ environments while treating build systems and internal tooling as engineering products in their own right...

Role Snapshot

  • Bring 5+ years of build engineering, developer tooling, platform engineering or closely related experience supporting production development teams
  • Combine strong C++ engineering ability with deep practical knowledge of CMake, including toolchains, presets, modules and target-based dependency management
  • Own dependency packaging for third-party C++ software, including compiling, patching and maintaining reproducible packages using Conan, vcpkg or comparable tooling
  • Manage binary compatibility and software distribution across supported Linux environments, including RPM packaging and artifact repository workflows
  • Evolve shared build infrastructure and reduce compilation overhead through caching, parallelisation, distributed compilation and other build-performance techniques
  • Build reusable CI/CD foundations that standardise compilation, testing and environment reproducibility without creating unnecessary friction for engineering teams
  • Maintain shared platform libraries and tooling used across development teams, with exposure potentially spanning C++, Python and q/kdb+
  • Define and improve container-based development environments, helping engineering teams adopt common tooling and resolving practical migration or usability issues
  • Hold a Computer Science, Engineering or comparable technical degree and be able to work directly with software engineers, quantitative researchers and infrastructure specialists
  • (Preferred) Experience with Python automation, q/kdb+, large Linux package ecosystems, artifact-repository administration, distributed C++ builds or quantitative/trading technology
