Job Description

[Up to c. £200k Comp Package | Office-Led Working]

Role Overview

We're representing an established quantitative investment research firm seeking a Senior Linux Platform Engineer to join its core infrastructure engineering function in London. The organisation operates a substantial computing environment supporting sophisticated research, engineering and data-intensive workloads, with Linux forming a critical part of its underlying technology. This position sits within an established Linux engineering team and focuses on the systems that enable approximately 21,000 hosts to operate securely, consistently and efficiently. The successful engineer will take significant ownership of Ubuntu and Red Hat Enterprise Linux platforms, particularly the development, testing and distribution of operating-system images through regular release cycles.

Beyond maintaining the existing estate, the role involves improving provisioning, strengthening security controls and developing automation that reduces manual intervention. It offers experienced Linux engineers the opportunity to work across the operating-system stack, contribute to infrastructure used throughout the business and help introduce more intelligent approaches to platform management...

Role Snapshot

  • Engineer and maintain Ubuntu and Red Hat Enterprise Linux platforms supporting approximately 21,000 hosts, with particular ownership of operating-system images and their release lifecycle
  • Bring typically 6-10 years of substantial Linux engineering experience, including demonstrable responsibility for complex, business-critical production environments
  • Demonstrate deep understanding of Linux internals, including system initialisation, kernel behaviour, filesystems, package management and troubleshooting at operating-system level
  • Develop and improve monthly image-building, validation and release processes, ensuring different OS variants meet demanding security, compatibility and performance expectations
  • Build and enhance automated provisioning and host lifecycle capabilities using technologies including PXE boot, Kickstart and cloud-init
  • Apply Ansible, Infrastructure as Code principles and Python engineering to create maintainable automation, deployment workflows and supporting platform utilities
  • Strengthen platform security through system hardening, vulnerability assessment, CVE prioritisation, kernel and package updates, and established security baselines
  • Develop and maintain supporting APIs, databases, package-management tooling and observability capabilities to improve system visibility and operational efficiency
  • (Preferred) Experience with advanced kernel performance optimisation, memory and I/O behaviour, scheduling or eBPF-based diagnostics and observability
  • (Preferred) Exposure to AI-assisted or agentic infrastructure operations, particularly controlled automation for identifying, investigating and resolving platform issues
